Winter Poems 375
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Snow"
Because the mountains are so deep, the snowy dusk at his grass hut feels lonely of itself, the poet sings. He layers things that call up loneliness: a hut deep in the mountains, snow, and evening.
The Ruijū and Teika texts give line 4 as koke no iori no, "of the moss hut."
Line 1 means "of itself, naturally."
Line 2: ka is exclamatory, and the poem pauses here. It is the same as line 2 of 367.
Line 3 uses mi to show cause, "because the mountains are deep."
Line 4 is a humble dwelling built of grass, taking up "my hut" in the preceding poem.
Line 5 ends on a noun, giving last the hour when loneliness is deepest. Poems 382, 383, and 390 end with the same line.
