Winter Poems 383
Headnote: "Snow at a quiet dwelling"
This poem was composed on the theme of snow at a quiet dwelling. The familiar old village was not so very lonely, yet the snowy dusk met in seclusion deep in Yoshino is lonely indeed. Setting the old village against the depths of Yoshino, the poet sharpens the loneliness of a snowy evening in the deep hills.
According to the source's note, the original manuscript gives line 2 as sorasabishi tomo, which the editor emended to urasabishi tomo from the Ruijū text; this edition follows that emendation. The Teika text lacks line 5. Kamo no Mabuchi, as with the preceding poem, called the phrase "snowy dusk" later in style.
Line 1 means "the place long familiar to me."
Line 2 means "lonely at heart," the line the editor emended from the Ruijū text.
Line 3: mono o is concessive, "though it was not so lonely."
Line 4 is the same as line 2 of 374, the depths of Yoshino.
Line 5 is the same as that of the preceding poem, ending on a noun to give the hour when loneliness is deepest.
