Today once again
gazing alone in my thoughts
the day has darkened—
at the house no one has promised,
the white snow in the garden.

Today once again, gazing alone lost in thought, I have watched the day grow dark—the white snow in the garden of a house that no one promised to visit.

Headnote: "Waiting for someone in the snow"
This poem was composed on the theme of waiting for someone in the snow. Waiting for one who never promised to come, the poet has once again gazed alone at the white snow in the garden until the day grew dark. He layers the accumulation of days without a visitor with the loneliness of a garden shut in by snow.
The Ruijū text gives the headnote as "On waiting for someone in the snow" and places the poem in the love section. Kamo no Mabuchi commented that the phrasing tanomenu yado no in line 4 is in a later style.

Line 1 means "today again," showing the days of waiting piling up.
Line 2 means "gazing alone, lost in thought."
Line 3: keri is exclamatory, and the poem pauses here.
Line 4 means "of the house where no one has given me cause to hope," the phrase Mabuchi called later in style.
Line 5 ends on a noun, giving last the garden snow without a single visitor's footprint.
