Love Poems 434
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Among poems on love"
Like a crane crossing the sky with its cry, the poet's love may go on weeping only in places as unreachable as the clouds; the poem suggests a beloved of high and distant station.
The base text glosses line 5 with wataruran, and the Ruijū text reads line 5 as naki wataran. Here the base text is followed.
Line 1 means "this love of mine."
Line 2 means "flying across the plain of heaven," the same words as 431.
Line 3 means "like the crane of the reeds," taking up the cranes of the preceding poem.
Line 4: kumoi means the sky and also suggests the court or a lofty place; ya binds namu in line 5.
Line 5 overlays crying as one flies across and weeping on and on.
