Not now, so late,
shall my name be bandied about;
like the smoke beneath
the tile-kiln, smoldering—
though I smolder in my grief.

Love Poems 435
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Among poems on love"
Like smoke smoldering beneath a tile kiln, the poet may smolder in secret grief, yet he resolves not to let rumor of his love spread now; it is a vow of hidden love.
The Ruijū text places it in the section of poems found in another manuscript and in printed editions.
Line 1 means "now, at this late time."
Line 2 means "my name shall not be spread," ji expressing negative intention; the poem pauses here.
Line 3 means "of the tile kiln," moving from the sky of the preceding poems to earthly smoke.
Line 4 means "the smoke burning beneath," overlaid with feelings that do not show.
Line 5 means "even though I smolder in grief," kuyuru meaning both smoldering smoke and brooding.
