Love Poems 437
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Among poems on love"
Like a robe printed in tangled patterns with mountain indigo, the poet's heart is tangled with longing that no one knows. Overlaying the robe's pattern with love's disorder, the poem draws on courtly tradition.
This poem was included in the Shokugosen Wakashū. According to the notes in the base text, the Ruijū text differs in line 2. Kamo no Mabuchi marked this poem with a circle.
Line 1 means "this love of mine," the same opening as 434.
Line 2 means "of the mountain indigo of Hatsuyama."
Line 3 names a robe printed with plant dye, whose tangled pattern serves as a preface leading to "tangled."
Line 4: koso is concluded by the evaluative shirane, turning adversative; it is the same as line 4 of 408.
Line 5: zo binds the attributive omou; it is the same last line as 424.
