who are said to make their home

not knowing what is in her heart—
such is the love I bear.

Love Poems 438
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Among poems on love"
As the hearts of woodcutters and hunters said to live deep in the mountains cannot be known, so the poet loves without knowing his beloved's heart.
The Ruijū text places it in the section of poems found in another manuscript and in printed editions. Kamo no Mabuchi marked it with a circle and noted that its diction is that of the Man'yōshū.
Line 1, ashihiki no, is a pillow word for "mountain."
Line 2 means "who are said to live in the mountains," chō being a contraction of to iu.
Line 3 names the mountain rustics, and the first three lines form a preface leading to "not knowing the heart."
Line 4 means "not knowing the heart."
Line 5: kana is exclamatory; it is the same last line as 431.
