Love Poems 439
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Among poems on love"
As one wanders lost in the deep mountains with nothing to guide him, so because of a beloved who offers no hold, the poet seems to wander, led astray by his own heart.
The base text glosses mayou in line 5 with madou. According to the notes in the base text, the Ruijū and Teika texts differ in line 5. Kamo no Mabuchi explained tazuki as "a hold" and noted it was later misunderstood as tatsu ki, "standing tree."
Line 1 means "of the deep mountains."
Line 2 means "knowing no hold," overlaying being lost in the mountains with having no way to reach the beloved.
Line 3 means "because of you."
Line 4 means "from my own heart," blaming no one but his own longing.
Line 5 means "I seem to wander," beranari expressing conjecture.
