Yamakawa no seze no iwanami wakikaeri onore hitori ya mi o kudakuramu

English Translation
Like the mountain stream
whose waves on the rocks of each rapid
seethe and churn,
am I the only one
who breaks myself apart?
Meaning
Like the waves of the mountain stream seething on the rocks of every rapid, am I alone breaking myself to pieces?
Commentary
Love Poems 447

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Among poems on love"
Like the waves of a mountain stream seething as they break on every rock, the poet wonders whether he alone is shattering himself with longing, and laments the beloved's indifference.

Line 1 means "of the mountain stream."
Line 2 is the same as line 4 of the preceding poem.
Line 3 means "seething up," overlaid with feeling welling in the breast.
Line 4: ya binds ramu in line 5; like onore nomi in 412, it laments that he alone suffers.
Line 5 means "do I break myself," the same last line as 412, taking up "breaking myself" from the preceding poem.
