Iwabashiru yamashita tagitsu yamakawa no kokoro kudakete koi ya wataramu

English Translation
Gushing over rocks,
the mountain stream seethes on
below the hills;
with a heart so shattered,
shall I go on in love?
Meaning
Like the mountain stream gushing over rocks and seething at the foot of the hills, shall I go on loving with my heart shattered?
Commentary
Love Poems 448

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Among poems on love"
Like the violent stream gushing over rocks down the mountain, the poet wonders whether he will go on loving with a shattered heart. It closes the sequence of torrent poems from the two preceding poems.
According to the notes in the base text, the Teika text reads line 1 as ishibashiru. Here the base text is followed.

Line 1 means "gushing over the rocks."
Line 2 means "seething below the mountain."
Line 3 means "like the mountain stream," the same word as line 1 of the preceding poem; the first three lines form a preface leading to "shattered."
Line 4 means "my heart shattered," moving the breaking of the body in the two preceding poems to the heart.
Line 5: ya binds the attributive mu.
