Love Poems 450
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Among poems on love"
Like a valley stream flowing hidden under the trees deep in the mountains of Shinobu in Michinoku, the poet cannot let his secret love be known. Shinobu serves as both a place name and hidden love.
Kamo no Mabuchi judged this poem to be in the later style.
Line 1 means "I cannot let it out," with an extra syllable; the poem pauses here, and what follows gives the figure by inversion.
Line 2 names the inner reaches of Shinobu, a poetic place in Michinoku, with a pun on shinobu, hidden love.
Line 3 means "since the mountains are deep," mi expressing cause.
Line 4 means "flowing hidden among the trees," overlaid with a love hidden from others' eyes; the same word as line 1 of 414.
Line 5 ends on a noun. Following the water through the stones of the preceding poem, it too sings of hidden water.
