Love Poems 451
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Among poems on love"
As the one thing he wishes, if nothing else, the poet says there is not a day he does not pray at the gods' shrine; it shows the earnestness of praying for love's fulfillment.
According to the notes in the base text, the Ruijū text reads line 5 as nakanu hi wa nashi, "no day I do not weep." Here the base text is followed.
Line 1 means "that at least," dani expressing a minimal wish.
Line 2 means "as the thing I wish."
Line 3, chihayaburu, is a pillow word for "gods."
Line 4 means "at the gods' shrine," turning from the natural scenes of the preceding poems to prayer.
Line 5 means "no day I do not pray," negu being a verb meaning to pray to the gods; the double negative stresses daily prayer.
