Love Poems 454
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of love at famous places"
As the sacred rope in the grove of Ukita at Ōaraki stretches long, the poet wonders whether he will only go on loving endlessly. The rope marking holy ground suggests a beloved out of reach.
Kamo no Mabuchi marked this poem with a circle.
Line 1 names Ōaraki, a poetic place in Yamashiro, with an extra syllable.
Line 2 means "in the grove of Ukita."
Line 3 means "like the sacred rope that is stretched," leading to uchihaete.
Line 4 means "only drawn out long," overlaying the stretched rope and a long-continuing love.
Line 5 is the same last line as the preceding poem.
