Love Poems 476
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of love at famous places"
Like water flowing secretly at the foot of Mount Shinobu in Michinoku, through the years the poet's longing only wells up within, with no way to meet; Shinobu echoes hidden love.
Line 1 names Mount Shinobu, a poetic place in Michinoku, echoing hidden love.
Line 2 means "like the water flowing beneath," the same as line 4 of 466.
Line 3 means "through the years."
Line 4: koso is concluded by the evaluative kaere, the welling of feeling, the same word as wakikaeri in 462.
Line 5 means "since there is no way to meet," o ... mi expressing cause; the reason is placed last by inversion.
