Kokoro o shi Shinobu no sato ni okitaraba Abukumagawa wa mimaku chikakemu

English Translation
If I were to leave
my heart in the village
of Shinobu, then
the river Abukuma
would not be far to see.
Meaning
If I were to leave my heart in the village of Shinobu, where one loves in secret, then the Abukuma River, whose name means meeting, would be near at hand to see.
Commentary
Love Poems 477

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of love at famous places"
If he leaves his heart in the village of Shinobu, whose name means hidden love, then the Abukuma River, whose name means meeting, may soon be seen; the poet layers place names to wish for a meeting.
According to the notes in the base text, the Ruijū and Teika texts differ in line 4, and the original manuscript is thought to be in error in line 5.

Line 1: shi is an intensive particle.
Line 2 means "in the village of Shinobu" in Michinoku, with a pun on hidden love; it takes up Mount Shinobu of the preceding poem.
Line 3 means "if I were to place it."
Line 4 names the Abukuma River in Michinoku, with a pun on au, "to meet."
Line 5 means "seeing it would be near," maku being a nominalized form of mu.
