English Translation
Like the sandbar birds
in the cove at Muko's bay
morning after morning,
always I would see you—
that is the one you are.
Meaning
Like the birds on the sandbar in the cove at Muko Bay, seen morning after morning, you are the one I always long to see.
Commentary
Love Poems 483

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of love at famous places"
Like the birds seen every morning on the sandbar in the cove at Muko Bay, the beloved is the one the poet always wishes to see; he states his love plainly. The poem draws on a Man'yōshū poem and has its simple tone.
According to the notes in the base text, the Teika text differs in line 5. Here the base text is followed. Kamo no Mabuchi marked this poem with a circle.

Line 1 names the bay of Muko, a poetic place in Settsu, with an extra syllable.
Line 2 names the birds on the sandbar of the cove.
Line 3 means "morning after morning," the same as line 3 of 421.
Line 4 means "always to see," maku being a nominalized form of mu, the same word as in 477.
Line 5 means "you whom I wish to see," kana exclamatory.
