English Translation
I had given up,
weary with grief, and yet
now, so late, like
the water of the moorland spring,
you make me trust again.
Meaning
I had resolved to give you up and suffered so, yet now, so late, like the old spring in the moor, you make me trust in you again.
Commentary
Love Poems 486

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of love at famous places"
Having struggled to give up his love, the poet now finds his beloved again raising his hopes like the old spring in the moor, and his heart is shaken. Drawing on the Kokinshū poem about "the moorland spring of old," it uses the spring as a symbol of an old love.
The base text glosses line 1 with tae. According to the notes in the base text, the Ruijū and Teika texts differ in lines 1 and 5. Here the base text is followed.

Line 1 means "cutting off my longing."
Line 2 means "though I had grieved," mono o adversative.
Line 3 means "now, at this late time."
Line 4 means "like the water of the moorland spring," the symbol of old love in the Kokinshū poem; the scene moves from sea and river to a spring in the fields.
Line 5 means "you make me trust," ending on the attributive of the lower bigrade tanomu with a note of exclamation.
