Love Poems 498
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Hidden love, on grasses"
Like pampas grass bending in the autumn wind, the poet does not show his love, but broods inwardly with a disordered heart. The summer pampas grass of the preceding poem becomes autumn grass.
According to the notes in the base text, the original manuscript reads line 5 as mono omou kana, and so do the Ruijū and Teika texts. Here the base text is followed.
Line 1 means "in the autumn wind."
Line 2 means "of the pampas grass that bends," turning the summer grass of the preceding poem to autumn.
Line 3 means "not coming out in plume," ho meaning plume and outward show; the line has an extra syllable.
Line 4 means "my heart in disorder," overlaid with grass tossed by the wind.
Line 5: kana is exclamatory.
