Love Poems 499
Headnote: "Hidden love"
Though the frost on the autumn hills where cold showers fall may color the leaves, the poet vows not to let his love show in his face; it is a vow of hidden love.
The Ruijū text places it in the section of poems found in another manuscript and in printed editions.
Line 1 means "where the cold showers fall," showers being thought to color the leaves.
Line 2 means "on the autumn hillside."
Line 3 means "of the settling frost," the same as line 3 of 429.
Line 4 means "I will not let it show," ji expressing negative intention.
Line 5 means "though the color may come out," repeating iro. After "not coming out in plume" in the preceding poem, it again sings of a love kept from view.
