Love Poems 501
Headnote: "Long-enduring love"
The poet lays his love, aging without a meeting, over the frost settling night after night on the bamboo grass of Furu moor, and asks how many nights, how many ages, it must go on.
This poem was included in the Shinchokusen Wakashū. The Ruijū text titles it "On the heart of long-enduring love."
Line 1 means "this love of mine."
Line 2 plays on furu, "passing time" and the moor of Furu in Yamato: aging without meeting.
Line 3 names a field of low bamboo grass, the same word as line 3 of the preceding poem.
Line 4 plays on ikuyo, "how many nights" and "how many ages"; ka binds ramu in line 5.
Line 5 means "will the frost settle?" From the shower-soaked grass of the preceding poem, it moves to frost on the grass.
