Like the dew so frail
on the mat, if you should rise

then with each and every dawn
shall I go on vanishing?

Love Poems 504
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love at dawn"
If the beloved rises and leaves at every dawn, as fleeting as dew upon a mat, the poet will vanish with each dawn. The parting at dawn of the preceding poem is here told from the side of the one left behind.
This poem was included in the Shinchokusen Wakashū.
Line 1 means "on the mat," sa being a prefix.
Line 2 means "fleetingly as dew."
Line 3 plays on oki, dew settling and rising: "if you rise and go"; it has an extra syllable and corresponds to line 4 of the preceding poem.
Line 4 means "at every dawn," taking up the dawn in line 1 of the two preceding poems.
Line 5: ya binds the attributive mu; the same last line as 415. Against the one who leaves in the preceding poem, it sings of the one who is left.
