Love Poems 505
Headnote: "Love on the morning after, at a mountain dwelling"
Had the beloved not come this morning, the poet would have vanished like the dew on the wayside grass by a mountain lodge in Yamashiro where no one comes; he rejoices at the visit on the morning after.
The Ruijū text titles it "The morning after, at a mountain dwelling."
Line 1 means "I would have vanished," na intensive and mashi counterfactual; the poem pauses here, answering the fear of vanishing in the preceding poem.
Line 2 means "had you not come this morning."
Line 3 means "of Yamashiro."
Line 4 means "of the lodge where no one comes."
Line 5 names the dew on the wayside grass, ending on a noun and laying the vanishing dew over the poet himself.
