Commentary
Love Poems 513

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of waiting for a lover"
How many autumns has the poet endured alone upon his mat? He is now just like the Maiden of Uji Bridge, forever waiting for her lover. It draws on the Kokinshū poem imagining the Uji Bridge Maiden spreading her single robe on her mat and waiting again tonight.

Line 1 is the same as line 1 of the preceding poem and of the source poem.
Line 2 means "how many years of autumns," the same words as "how many autumns" in 508.
Line 3 means "I have endured," and the poem pauses here.
Line 4 means "now I am just the same," the same phrase as line 2 of 488.
Line 5 names the Maiden of Uji Bridge, who waits for her lover at the bridge, ending on a noun; the poet sees himself in this emblem of waiting love.
