Love Poems 512
Headnote: "Composed on the theme of waiting for a lover"
Alone on his mat the poet has let the years pass in vain, never meeting his beloved, just as the hem of his night robe does not meet. From here follow poems on the topic of waiting for a lover.
Line 1 means "on the mat," the same word as line 1 of 504.
Line 2 means "alone and in vain," taking up "alone" from the preceding poem.
Line 3 means "the years have passed," and the poem pauses here.
Line 4 means "of the night robe."
Line 5 overlays a hem that does not meet and lovers who do not meet; like "without meeting" in 492, it ends on not meeting.
