Love Poems 511
Headnote: "When people were composing poems, and I had them compose on "waiting for a lover through the years," I composed this on that occasion"
Like an insect crying alone, soaked by dew on the low reeds of a neglected village, the poet has waited through the years and weeps alone in resentment. It was composed when he had people compose on the topic of waiting for a lover through the years.
The Ruijū text gives the headnote as "When I had people compose on waiting for a lover through the years, I composed this on that occasion."
Line 1 means "of the old village," a place where a lover's visits have ceased.
Line 2 means "in the dew on the low reeds," taking up the reed moor of the two preceding poems.
Line 3 means "knotted in gloom," the same word continued from the two preceding poems.
Line 4 means "of the insect crying alone," with an extra syllable, overlaying the insect's cry and the poet's weeping.
Line 5 means "resents the one," ending on the attributive form with exclamation.
