is so painful that I'd wish,
like the moon that rises
shining from the mountain's rim,
to be seen plainly by you.

Love Poems 517
Headnote: "Waiting for someone, on the moon"
Hiding his love is so painful that the poet wishes to be seen by his beloved as plainly as the moon rising over the mountain's rim. Under the topic of waiting for someone, on the moon, the moonrise is laid over his wish to meet.
The Ruijū text places it in the section of poems found in another manuscript and in printed editions.
Line 1 means "when I keep it hidden."
Line 2 means "since it is painful," mono o used here as causal.
Line 3 means "at the mountain's rim."
Line 4 means "of the moon rising," overlaid with something hidden coming into view.
Line 5 means "I wish to be seen in its light," namu expressing a wish.
