Love Poems 518
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Waiting for someone, on the moon"
Even on the evening when, weary of resentment, he resolved to wait no longer, the moon rose over the mountain's rim as always. The poet entrusts to the moonrise the ache of a heart that, seeing the moon, cannot help but wait.
The Ruijū text places it in the section of poems found in another manuscript and in printed editions. Kamo no Mabuchi marked this poem with a circle.
Line 1 means "weary of resentment."
Line 2 means "thinking I will not wait," ji expressing negative intention.
Line 3 means "even on the evening," dani implying a greater case.
Line 4 means "still, at the mountain's rim," the same words as the preceding poem.
Line 5 means "the moon has risen," keri exclamatory. Whereas the preceding poem wished to be seen like the moon, here the moon rises even on an evening of refusing to wait.
