Love Poems 519
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Waiting for someone, on the moon"
Even over the hill that made no promise the moon has risen, yet the beloved, who only said she would come, does not; the poet is left with the evening sky. It draws on Sosei's poem about waiting through the night for one who "only said" she would come, until the dawn moon appeared.
Kamo no Mabuchi judged the overly clever turn of line 4 to be in the later style.
Line 1 means "even to wait," the same as line 1 of 516.
Line 2 means "even the hill that made no promise," replacing "the one who made no promise" of 516 with a hill.
Line 3 means "the moon has risen," taking up the last line of the preceding poem; the poem pauses here.
Line 4 means "you only said," drawing on "only because you said" in the source poem.
Line 5 ends on a noun. The hill that promised nothing yields a moon while the person who promised does not come, closing the poems on waiting love.
