Iro o dani sode yori tsutau shitahagi no shinobishi aki no nobe no yūtsuyu

English Translation
Even the color
passes from my sleeve—
the lower clover leaves,
the autumn of my secret love,
the evening dew on the fields.
Meaning
Even the color of my love passes from my sleeve, like the evening dew on the fields that tinged the lower clover leaves in the autumn when I loved in secret.
Commentary
Love Poems 529

Headnote: "Love, on dew"
As the evening dew of autumn, when he loved in secret, tinged the lower leaves of the bush clover, so even from his tear-wet sleeves the color of love seeps out.
The Ruijū text places it in the section of poems found in another manuscript and in printed editions. Kamo no Mabuchi judged sode yori tsutau in line 2 to be in the later style.

Line 1 means "even the color," dani implying a greater case.
Line 2 means "passes from my sleeve," love's color seeping from a tear-wet sleeve.
Line 3 means "of the lower clover leaves," thought to be colored by dew.
Line 4 means "of the autumn when I hid my love," echoing hidden love.
Line 5 ends on a noun. From rain, the poems turn to love on dew.
