Love Poems 530
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love, on dew"
Even from mere dew, not the tears on his sleeve, the lower clover leaves have colored; how then could the poet's tear-soaked longing not show? The pain of hidden love is implied.
According to the notes in the base text, the Ruijū text reads line 5 as iro ni idekeri, and Sasaki Nobutsuna's annotated edition reads iro ni idenikeri. Here the base text is followed.
Line 1 means "of my sleeve," like waga sode ni in 520.
Line 2 means "which are not even tears," with an extra syllable.
Line 3 means "even from the dew," dani implying a greater case.
Line 4 means "the lower leaves of bush clover," taking up shitahagi from the preceding poem.
Line 5 means "have shown their color," keri exclamatory; like "even the color" in the preceding poem, it sings of color showing.
