Love Poems 533
Headnote: "Love, on pinks"
From the beads of morning dew on the pinks the poet draws tamasaka, "now and then," and asks his beloved not to set her heart apart even occasionally. The nadeshiko, "stroked child," suggests a dear one.
The base text writes the title with a miswritten character, but since the poem is on pinks, it is given here as "Love, on pinks." The base text glosses line 2 with nuru, and the Ruijū text differs in line 2. Here the base text is followed.
Line 1 means "of the pinks," nadeshiko suggesting a beloved child.
Line 2 means "resting on the blossom."
Line 3 means "like the beads of morning dew," whose tama, "bead," leads to tamasaka.
Line 4 plays on tama, dewdrop, and tamasaka, "now and then"; the same as line 4 of 475.
Line 5 means "do not set your heart apart," na being prohibitive. The imagery moves from autumn pampas to summer pinks.
