Love Poems 532
Headnote: "Love, on pampas grass"
Though the one he waits for never comes, the poet's love has come into the open like pampas grass in plume, and he is vexed. Taking up "will they show their plumes" from the preceding poem, it sings of a love that has shown itself.
This poem was included in the Shinshokukokin Wakashū. Kamo no Mabuchi noted that "coming out in plume" is often used in the Man'yōshū.
Line 1 means "the one I wait for."
Line 2 means "though she does not come," mono yue ni being adversative.
Line 3 names pampas grass in plume, leading to ho.
Line 4 plays on ho, plumes appearing and love showing; netashi means vexing.
Line 5 is the same last line as 484.
