Kogane horu Michinokuyama ni tatsu tami no inochi mo shiranu koi mo suru kana

English Translation
Like the common folk
who toil in the hills of Michinoku
digging for gold,
heedless even of their lives,
such is the love I bear.
Meaning
Like the common folk who toil in the hills of Michinoku digging for gold with no thought for their lives, I love with no thought for my own.
Commentary
Love Poems 540

Headnote: "Love, on gold"
Like the common people who toil in the hills of Michinoku digging for gold without regard for their lives, the poet loves without sparing his own. It uses the unusual subject of the gold-producing hills of Michinoku.
The Ruijū text titles it "Love, likened to gold." Kamo no Mabuchi marked this poem with a circle.

Line 1 means "digging for gold."
Line 2 means "in the hills of Michinoku," known as a source of gold.
Line 3 means "of the people who toil there."
Line 4 means "heedless of their lives."
Line 5 is the same last line as 532. From natural scenes the subject turns to human labor.
