With no meeting had,
baseless rumor rises up,
at the Tatsu market
I stop, with coin in hand,
already lost in longing.

Love Poems 541
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love, on gold"
Though they have never met, baseless rumor rises, and like one stopping at the Tatsu market with coin, the poet broods before any meeting. On the topic of gold, tatsu and kane carry double meanings.
The base text glosses line 3 with uru. According to the notes in the base text, the Ruijū and Teika texts differ in line 3. Here the base text is followed.
Line 1 means "of meeting."
Line 2 plays on tatsu, a baseless rumor rising and the Tatsu market.
Line 3 means "I stop at the market."
Line 4 plays on kane, "money" and kanete, "beforehand," with an extra syllable.
Line 5 means "such is my lot," keri exclamatory; taking up the gold of the preceding poem, it continues the topic.
