Miscellaneous Poems 565
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the heart of travel"
Spreading one sleeve of his travelling robe, the poet wonders whether he must again sleep alone on a pillow of grass. The loneliness of the road and the absence of a companion overlap. Kamo no Mabuchi marked this poem with a sign of praise.
It was included in the imperial anthology Gyokuyō Wakashū.
Line 1 means "travelling robe."
Line 2 means "spreading a single sleeve," a poetic phrase for sleeping alone.
Line 3 means "tonight again?" ya being an interrogative binding particle concluded by mu in line 5; it implies the nights before were the same.
Line 4 means "on a pillow of grass," taking the pillow word kusamakura of the two preceding poems as a real scene.
Line 5 means "shall I sleep alone?"
