Miscellaneous Poems 566
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the heart of travel"
Sleeping on the shore of Ise, the poet binds dew-wet beach reeds into a pillow, and the moonlight is reflected and lodges in the dew. Within the loneliness of travel he finds the beauty of the moon.
It was included in the imperial anthology Shokukokin Wakashū. The Ruijū text places it in its travel section titled "Poem of travel." Kamo no Mabuchi judged the moonlight lodged in dew to be a later conceit.
Line 1 means "sleeping on the road."
Line 2 means "the beach reeds of Ise," long sung in poetry.
Line 3 means "with the dew still on them."
Line 4 means "on the pillow I bind," replacing the "pillow of grass" of the preceding poem with the reeds of Ise.
Line 5 means "the moonlight lodging," ending on a noun; as the traveller lodges, so does the moon in the dew.
