Miscellaneous Poems 573
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Evening dew on a journey"
Dew lies on the foothill fields at dusk as the traveller passes, and the autumn wind sweeps across it. The sorrow in his heart and the chill of the wind scattering the dew overlap. Kamo no Mabuchi marked this poem with a sign of praise.
The Ruijū text places it in its travel section.
Line 1 means "travelling robe," calling up the related words ura and suso.
Line 2 means "vaguely sad," ura meaning the heart and echoing the lining of a robe.
Line 3 means "of evening," taking up "autumn evening" from the two preceding poems.
Line 4 means "on the dew of the foothills," suso echoing the hem of the robe; it is the same as line 2 of the next poem, 574.
Line 5 means "the autumn wind blows," zo a binding particle concluded by fuku in the attributive form.
