Miscellaneous Poems 572
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Evening dew on a journey"
Dew, the dew of tears, settles even on the sleeves of those who stay at home; how much more on the traveller pushing through the fields in the autumn dusk. The sorrow of the autumn evening is deepened by the dew of the road.
The Ruijū text places it in its travel section. Kamo no Mabuchi called "just at this time" a later idiom. Line 1 is hard to read in the source as displayed and is read nobe wakenu, following the Ruijū text and the text transmitted by Teika.
Line 1 means "who do not push through the fields."
Line 2 means "even on sleeves, the dew," dani naming the lesser case to imply the greater.
Line 3 means "settles, and yet," mono o adversative.
Line 4 means "just at this season."
Line 5 ends on a noun, the same as the preceding poem. That poem showed a traveller wet with dew; this one measures the depth of the road's dew by contrast with those who stay behind.
