Miscellaneous Poems 581
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Frost at a lodging on a journey"
Sleeping on the plain of Inano with bamboo grass for a pillow, the poet sees something white; is it frost on the pillow, or lodging moonlight? The conceit mistakes the whiteness of frost and of moonlight. Kamo no Mabuchi marked this poem with a sign of praise.
The Ruijū text places it in its travel section. The text transmitted by Teika reads line 3 as sasamakura.
Line 1, shinagadori, is a pillow word for Ina, the same as in 568 of this book.
Line 2 means "of the plain of Inano," a poetic place in Settsu.
Line 3 means "a pillow of bamboo grass."
Line 4 means "is it frost on the pillow?" repeating "pillow" from line 3, ya interrogative.
Line 5 means "the lodging moonlight," ending on a noun; it shares this last line with 566 of this book, turning moon in dew into moon in frost.
