Miscellaneous Poems 586
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On a painting on a folding screen showing many travellers in snowfall in the mountains"
At dawn snow has piled up to the pillow of the dreaming traveller, and when he wakes only the wind in the pines on the peak comes to call. In the mountains where no one visits, the wind is his only companion.
The Ruijū text places it in its travel section. Kamo no Mabuchi called "pillow of dreams" a later phrase.
Line 1 means "at dawn," advancing time from the "night of deep snow" of the preceding poem.
Line 2 means "on the pillow of dreams."
Line 3 means "the snow piles up."
Line 4 means "visiting my waking," treating the wind as a visitor.
Line 5 is the same last line as the preceding poem, "the wind in the pines on the peak," ending on a noun.
