Mare ni kite kiku dani kanashi yamagatsu no koke no iori no niwa no matsukaze

English Translation
Coming here but rarely,
even to hear it is sad:
in the woodsman's hut
overgrown with moss,
the wind through the garden pines.
Meaning
Even I, who come here only rarely, find it sad just to hear it: the wind in the pines of the garden by the woodsman's moss-grown hut.
Commentary
Miscellaneous Poems 587

Headnote: "Composed on a folding-screen painting of many travellers at a mountain dwelling with pines"
On a screen showing travellers stopping at a mountain dwelling with pines, the poet reflects that if the wind in the pines is sad even to a rare visitor, how must it be for the one who lives there and hears it every day.
The Ruijū text places it in its travel section.

Line 1 means "coming but rarely," the same opening as the next poem, 588; the two form a pair.
Line 2 means "even to hear it is sad," dani implying how much more for those who live here, with a break after the line.
Line 3 means "of the mountain folk."
Line 4 means "of the moss-grown hut."
Line 5 ends on a noun and shares this last line with the next poem, moving the "wind in the pines on the peak" of the two preceding poems to the garden of the screen's mountain house.
