English Translation
In the rain of spring
drenched and dripping as he goes
along the footsore
mountain path he must be taking—
that mountain man, who is he?
Meaning
Drenched and dripping in the spring rain, he must be going along the mountain path; who could he be, that man of the mountains?
Commentary
Miscellaneous Poems 592

Headnote: "On the way back from the pilgrimage to the Two Shrines, when the spring rain fell hard"
Returning from the pilgrimage to the Two Shrines in heavy spring rain, the poet sees a mountain man going along the path soaked through and wonders who he could be.
The Ruijū text places it in its travel section with the headnote "When spring rain fell hard on the way down from the Two Shrines." The base text reads line 2 as uchikobochitsutsu, which Kamo no Mabuchi corrected; it is here read uchisobochitsutsu. Mabuchi cites the Man'yōshū poem ending "the mountain man, who is he?"

Line 1 means "in the spring rain."
Line 2 means "drenched through," uchi a prefix and tsutsu showing continuation.
Line 3, ashihiki no, is a pillow word for "mountain."
Line 4 means "must be going along the mountain path," ramu conjectural.
Line 5 means "who is the mountain man?" the same as the Man'yōshū poem's last line; like the next poem, 593, it sings of spring rain.
