Miscellaneous Poems 593
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the way back from the pilgrimage to the Two Shrines, when the spring rain fell hard"
The poet calls on the spring rain not to fall so hard, lest the travellers' robes be soaked. Following his concern for the mountain man in the preceding poem, he now thinks of the travellers, himself and his company among them.
The Ruijū text places it in its travel section.
Line 1 takes up "in the spring rain" from the preceding poem and makes the rain the one addressed.
Line 2 means "do not fall so hard," na ... so expressing prohibition, with a break after the line; it has the same form as "do not blow so fiercely" in 568 of this book.
Line 3 means "the travellers'."
Line 4 means "robes for the road."
Line 5 means "lest they be soaked," mo koso expressing fear of a bad outcome, concluded by sure in the perfective form.
