English Translation
To the capital
I would go if only in dreams;
if there be a way,
O mountain wind of Utsu,
carry my heart there on your breath.
Meaning
I long to go to the capital, if only in a dream; if there is any way, wind of Mount Utsu, carry my heart there as you blow.

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed and sent by a messenger when a certain person had gone up to the capital"
Longing to visit the one in the capital, if only in a dream, the poet asks the wind of Mount Utsu on the eastern highway to carry his heart there. It draws on the eastern journey of The Tales of Ise, where at Mount Utsu the hero laments that he meets no one, neither in waking nor in dreams.
The base text reads line 1 as miyakobito ni, corrected to miyakobe ni from another copy and the Ruijū text; that reading is followed here.

Line 1 means "toward the capital."
Line 2 means "would I go even in dreams."
Line 3 means "if there be a way."
Line 4 means "the mountain wind of Utsu," Utsu in Suruga echoing utsutsu, "waking," set against "dreams" in line 2.
Line 5 means "blow and carry it," an imperative addressed to the wind.
