That such a time
would come, I should have known;
why did I resent
the draught that slipped between us
when your arm was my pillow?
- Meaning
- Such a time as this was bound to come; why, then, did I resent the draught that crept in through the gap when we slept with arms for pillows?

Miscellaneous Poems 596
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed and sent by a messenger when a certain person had gone up to the capital"
Had he known this time of separation would come, the poet says, he would not have resented the draught creeping through when they slept arm in arm; now even that draught is dear to him.
Line 1 means "such a time too," six syllables, one beyond the norm.
Line 2 means "there was bound to be, and yet," mono o adversative.
Line 3 means "of the arm as pillow."
Line 4 means "the wind leaking through the gap," continuing the cold bed of the preceding poem.
Line 5 means "why did I resent it?" kemu being past conjecture, expressing regret.
