Miscellaneous Poems 606
Headnote: "In autumn, when someone I used to talk with intimately had gone away, sending a letter and other things by a messenger"
When an intimate friend went away in autumn, the poet sent a letter by messenger. Recalling the moon he saw in the sky, he longs for the autumn they spent gazing at it together.
The Ruijū text places it in its love section with a slightly different headnote.
Line 1 means "in the sky," six syllables, one beyond the norm, echoing the restless "up in the air" of a heart.
Line 2 means "the face I saw," overlaying the moon's face and that of the one who watched it with him.
Line 3 means "recalling," six syllables; it answers "remember" at the start of the next poem, 607.
Line 4 means "when we grew familiar with the moon," nare also implying intimacy with the friend.
Line 5 means "I long for the autumn," zo concluded by koishiki.
