though the days we saw together
have grown distant now,
the lingering trace of then:
the moon at break of dawn.

Miscellaneous Poems 607
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "In autumn, when someone I used to talk with intimately had gone away, sending a letter and other things by a messenger"
Though the days they shared have grown remote, the poet asks the departed friend to remember the dawn moon they watched as a last keepsake. After telling of his own remembering in the preceding poem, he now asks the other to remember too.
The Ruijū text places it among the "poems found in other and printed texts" with almost the same headnote.
Line 1 means "remember!" an imperative, with a break after the line, turning "recalling" in the preceding poem into a plea.
Line 2 means "the time we saw, apart."
Line 3 means "even if it has become," tomo concessive.
Line 4 means "the lingering trace of what was."
Line 5 names the dawn moon still in the sky, ending on a noun as the object of line 1 in inversion; it takes the moon "we grew close to" in the preceding poem as the moon of the parting morning.
