English Translation

the pines that will grow taller,
on them alone
"eight hundred myriad ages"
the spring wind blows.
Meaning
On the pines of Mount Kurai, which will grow ever taller, and on them alone, the spring wind blows, wishing them eight hundred myriad ages.
Commentary
Miscellaneous Poems 659

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the theme of celebration through the pine"
On the pines of Mount Kurai, which will grow ever taller, the spring wind blows wishing them countless ages. The place name Kurai echoes kurai, "rank," and the pine bears a wish for ever higher rank.
The Ruijū text places it in its section of celebration.

Line 1 names Mount Kurai in Hida, kurai meaning both the place and "rank."
Line 2 means "will grow taller," mu conjectural, overlaying rising rank.
Line 3 means "on the pines alone."
Line 4 means "for eight hundred myriad ages," echoing line 4 of 618 and 641.
Line 5 means "the spring wind blows," zo concluded by fuku; it pairs with "the pine wind blows" in the preceding poem, the two last lines answering each other.
