Headnote: "Composed on seeing a single pine by the shore when I went on a pilgrimage"
On a pilgrimage, the poet saw a lone pine by the shore and, treating it as a person, found it forlorn without a friend. It may also be read as laying his own heart upon the lonely tree.
Kamo no Mabuchi remarked that ana tsurezurege rephrases the Man'yōshū ana tazutazushi, but not well.
Line 1, azusayumi, is a pillow word for iso, "shore."
Line 2 means "standing by the shore," taking up "the pine on the shore" of the preceding poem.
Line 3 means "a single pine," with a break after the line.
Line 4 means "ah, how lonely it looks," ana an interjection.
Line 5 means "having no friend," the inversion giving the reason last; like the "deer without a mate" of 576 of this book, it sings of friendless solitude.
