Headnote: "Composed on seeing waves breaking on a rugged shore"
Watching waves on a rough shore, the poet sings in one sweep how the waves that roar against the rocks break, shatter, split and scatter, piling up verbs. It renders the violent motion of the waves so that one sees and hears it, and is famous as one of Sanetomo's finest poems.
It uses the opening words of the Man'yōshū poem about the waves roaring on the shore of the Ise sea. The Ruijū text reads line 3 as yoru nami no, with a note giving yosuru nami.
Line 1 means "of the great sea," turning from the shore pines of the preceding poems to the waves.
Line 2 means "making the shore resound."
Line 3 means "the waves that surge in."
Line 4 means "breaking and shattering."
Line 5 means "splitting and scattering!" kamo exclamatory; from line 4 into line 5, warete, kudakete, sakete pile up te forms to drive home the breaking of the waves.
